Yesterday was a bank holiday in France so we went up to Montmartre, where the film Amélie is set, with a group of friends. It started to rain as we were leaving the apartment, but we decided to go anyway, which proved to be a wise decision as when we emerged from the Metro it was clear.
Montmartre isn’t just a neighborhood, it’s a window into Paris’ past. Located in the north of Paris in the 18th arrondissement, Montmartre is a uniquely historic village within the city, and has long been known as an artist’s enclave. Little development has been allowed in Montmartre, so it has retained much of its character. The area has numerous street painters, restaurants and museums, and just strolling Montmartre is an attraction in itself.
We started at Place des Abbesses, where the je t’aime wall has the words “I love you” written in 311 languages, there’s a carousel and a little playground and from there we walked up and up and up….
