If you are a regular reader, you know that here at Les enfants a Paris, we make it a priority to introduce you to new brands and labels that you are not aware of.
Today we would like to introduce you to Amelie et Sophie.
Amelie et Sophie is a luxury brand for children aged 3 to 12. Amelie et Sophie put a selection of quality fabrics in natural fibres – such as luxury cashmeres, silks and pure wools – and a hand-made ethic at the centre of its production. By using small local workshops the brand ensures that every garment is a perfect expression of quality and uniqueness where all the elements of the creative process unite; resulting in sophisticated and timeless garments.
Time for an interview with Margaret Plutecka.
What is the creative identity of your brand ‘Amelie et Sophie’?
Amelie et Sophie is a luxury fashion brand that mainly focuses on the highest quality above all. Our clothes unite quality and comfort with an elegant, classy and timeless appeal. Chic yet simple design. The cuts remain simple and charming, but immersed in 50’s feminine and romantic inspiration. Amelie et Sophie’s little ladies love effortless glamour. They wear silk blouses, A-line shaped dresses, balloon jackets, tunic dresses and beautifully cut coats.
What is your background prior to Amelie et Sophie?
I am a mother of 2 boys and 1 girl, Sophie. I launched Amelie et Sophie because I wanted Sophie, to wear clothes that could be classy, iconic but also comfortable and made of natural fabrics. I’m an architect and interior designer. I love the combination of those two activities, I still try to combine them both. I love ‘architectural’ fashion – playing with forms, folding papers and fabrics, ‘origami’ style.
For almost 20 years I lived in Geneva, Paris, New York and Los Angeles. That had a strong influence on my life. I combine different styles but always keep the balance, form and aesthetics in my creations.
What is your key piece of the collection?
I love COATS. I buy the best quality cashmere which looks impeccable and at the same time it is very comfortable for children to run, play, be themselves. Our coats are worn on special occasions as well as everyday life. Sophie wears cashmere coats everywhere – to school, for excursions, friends’ birthdays… everyday, everywhere…
I love to experiment with different forms. But the best is always classic cut like the coats from Dior, Balenciaga, MaxMara, YSL, Valentino worn by the icons like Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly or Jacqueline Kennedy.
What’s the farthest place you’ve sent a package?
Canada…
What could we find in your washing machine?
During the week I love to wear jeans or Chino pants together with silk blouses, cashmere sweaters and coats. Classic cut, very comfortable… I don’t spend too much time dressing up in the morning. I prefer fewer clothes but good quality. I absolutely live in a minimalism: in clothes, interiors…
I look for quality, timeless clothes that will last many seasons, and chemical-free, organic fabrics when possible.
What is the most incredible garment you have ever been wearing?
My wedding dress. I still have it although I don’t know if I would fit in it:) But I guess I won’t need it anymore, so it doesn’t matter. I’ll keep it for Sophie…
What do you love most about your job?
Creativity, action, meeting a lot of new people, talking to children… Architect has a very similar job to a clothing designer. I love the new ideas, all parts of the creation process…
I love to see happy kids, their reactions when they wear our clothes. Children will always tell the truth about the comfort of wearing, looks. Their comments really help to create pieces that are perfect for them.
I also love photos sent by ‘Amelie et Sophie’ children from various parts of the world…
In terms of kids fashion, do you think “less is more” or should children be able to wear everything they want?
I am the kind of mother who puts the clothes that she really likes into her children’s wardrobes. And then they can wear whatever they want. I try to teach them about the quality of clothes, different fabrics… I think that you don’t need lots of clothes in your wardrobe if you buy good quality. I love minimalism in clothes as well as in architecture… If you buy good quality children clothing you can pass them along to the little sisters or next generations – and that is also a goal of Amelie et Sophie.
What’s the funniest reaction you have got from a client?
Once there was a girl who told me that she jumped into the swimming pool in her Josephine dress. It was at the garden party of her aunt’s wedding. The funniest thing is that she said the dress was very comfortable to crawl and dive. Now she is our loyal customer.
What would you buy with 10 euro’s?
Pistacchio ice cream.
If you could only wear one colour?
That would be definitely GREIGE! mix of grey and beige…I love this colour in interiors, clothes … everywhere around me…. It’s calm, elegant, just beautiful.
What is the first thing you will do after answering all our questions?
I will pick up my kids from school. I love to drive them home and then spend the evenings together. I call it ‘quality time’. I love to talk to them, cook dinner together and have fun.
What are your future projects for Amelie et Sophie?
Since we are quite a young company we mainly focus on our expansion… We have plans to open a flagship stores in Paris, London, Geneva, Moscow, NYC, Shanghai…
I receive a lot of positive comments from the mothers. Since they love the design and quality of our little clothes I am thinking about creating a capsule collection for them.
