Dutch label Humanoid started out as a contemporary womenswear brand. Born in the 80s, the collection still reflects the unruliness and freedom of the new wave era, creating simple and unfussy clothing that focuses on the core Humanoid philosophy – the individual.
This season they have launched their first Humanoid Mini collection for children aged 1 – 4 years old. Designs that whilst stylish are comfortable at the same time and are well made.
Time for an interview with Humanoid’s design team!

Would you mind introducing yourself and your brand to our readers?
Humanoid is a dutch women brand that started in 1981. It is a complete and unique womenswear label with a cosmopoliton, effortlessly and feminine style. This season we have our first Humanoid Mini collection for kids from 1 – 4 years.
Where does the name Humanoid originate from?
Human-oid, literally: like a human. HUMANOID’s strength is that it is a brand like a wonderful person. Two feet on the ground, feeling completely sound and comfortable with yourself, doing what you feel you have to do and above all, having a great time. Freedom. Quality. Here and now.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background? How did you become a designer for children?
We often got requests for items in smaller version. Sandra Harmsen, creative director Humanoid “Our studio has often made mini versions of our designs for kids of Humanoid loyal fans, when a new baby was born for example. And they got a great reaction. So we decided to make a collection of the best pieces from our Spring Summer collection 2015.
What are the inspirations or motivations behind your design?
Every HUMANOID collection originates from the sense of freedom, and the feel of the materials. The way they drape, move, how it behaves while treated and how it caresses the skin. Soft, lush fabrics, great qualities. They appear to be worn in and washed, they all match in shades, structures and in layering. Fine cashmere, unstable cotton, suede and leather. Earthly, feminine, comfortable and contemporary. Every collection a continuation of the previous one
Do you have children? How does that influence your work?
Some of the designers have children, and that was especially usefull when designing the collection. They know what works for children and what not, and we could try the new designs on the kids and see if they liked it!
What are some essentials that every child should have in their closet?
First and foremost, Childrens clothing should be comfortable with nice good quality fabrics that are soft and gentle. So there should always be comfortable trousers or dresses. Nice t-shirts that you can wear under your sweater or cardigan and of course it is nice when you can wash them in the machine 🙂
What are the most rewarding and most challenging aspects of your job?
For styling/designing: to enhance your creativity and always come up with new and exciting things, which is at the same time also the most challenging. To keep develloping and stay interesting and surprising. It is rewarding to see people in your clothing feeling happy in it.
