UNTIL NEXT TIME

You’ve seen her. She’s the mum who wakes up at the crack of dawn to get her children fed and dressed every day for school. She’s the mum who puts in 50 hours a week at her day job but still has the time to sit down and help her children with their homework.

She’s also the mum who hasn’t had a haircut in months, is the last person to eat a meal at home, and almost never buys anything new for herself. She mops, shops, never complains, volunteers to be the class homeroom mum, and still manages to do all of her husbands rugby team’s uniform laundry by the end of the week.

You know her. She’s your neighbour, your child’s best friend’s mum, that woman you passed in the super market and the reflection you see in the mirror every morning. She’s everywhere.

Mums run the show, even if they’re sometimes standing in the shadows of some of the most important people in the world.

Sacrifice. Eh, it sounds like such a dirty word, doesn’t it? I cringe over the use of it when referring to motherhood because I don’t want to feel like I gave up my life for my children. I simply changed the course of my future by determining that my family would be the number one priority in my life. You can call that sacrifice, but I call it a choice.

It’s a choice that all of us mums out there make.

Sure, there are days that I don’t have enough energy to read yet another bedtime story, when I feel breathless and frazzled and want to do nothing but watch another episode of The Designated Survivor on Netflix. But being a mum is what I do, and I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it so damn hard.

Having said that, there are millions of mothers from around the world whose hard work and dedication go both unheard and unseen. But it’s what we mothers do. We keep this world on its axis. So here’s a reminder about how appreciated we are in this sometimes unappreciative universe.
