Ice skaters all have a look of their own. Some leap and spin, and some creep slowly, almost on tiptoe, clutching a friend or a guardrail. Many race around the ice, bending low into the wind, while others stand upright and glide lazily.
But ice skating feels the same no matter who’s doing it. There’s the snug, reassuring bind of a leather boot around each ankle as you tie up your skates and the heady sensation of balancing on one blade as you rise to your feet.
There’s the crackle of the ice underfoot, the spray of snow from your blade when you stop and the cozy contrast between the warmth inside your mittens and the chill on your cheeks.
Hot chocolate tastes better after ice skating and when you look around a rink, almost everybody is smiling.
