Beach, sky, sun and sand. I can’t wait, but these are also the elements that define the Australian summer and are reflected in Little Emperor’s SS15 collection with colours such as cool ocean blues, crisp white and sunshiny yellow. The collection brings back the designer’s childhood memories of long days spent at the beach, searching through rock pools and making new friends.
It’s about time we find out more about Elizabeth Bold and her brand Little Emperor.
Would you mind introducing yourself and your brand to our readers?
Hello I’m Elizabeth, owner/designer of the Australian children’s clothing label Little Emperor.
Where does the name Little Emperor clothing originate from?
Our name was borne from a love for the emperor penguins of Antarctica. Fun, unique, and perpetually well-dressed, these feathery fellows perfectly represent our brand, as well as the children who wear Little Emperor.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background? How did you become a fashion designer for kids?
I have a mum who shared her knowledge with me from an early age, knowledge of fabrics, garment construction and the many benefits of handmade items over mass produced products. When I became a parent the desire to make a positive impact in the world grew stronger. I decided to use the skills I had to create a label that is a part of the Slow Fashion Movement. I love producing garments that are high quality and unique enough to be treasured and kept, or passed onto other family members, but are still practical enough for everyday wear. I want Little Emperor to be a brand that celebrates a slower, more conscientious rate of consuming.
What are the inspirations or motivations behind your design?
I relish the curiosity young children have with nature, and I love seeing them delight in a simple pattern or shape which would otherwise seem menial to adults. The spiral of a seashell, or the geometric repetition in flowers and leaves. I am inspired by these patterns in nature, as well as the seemingly infinite imagination children have.
What is your favourite piece from the current collection?
The ‘Summer Twiggy’ dress (featured above) with its geometric daisy print and A-line cut is so playful! I love its 1960’s feel. And for boy’s the ‘Here Comes the Sun’ organic cotton shirt is so fresh and brimming with sunshine. It’s been a smash hit.
Do you have children? How does that influence your work?
I have a four year old girl who, like most four year olds, is full of imagination and life force. Designing for girls comes naturally and is lots of fun, but I equally love designing for boys. I love sourcing unique fabrics in order to create clothing that goes beyond the predictable motifs and designs available for boys.
What are some essentials that every child should have in their closet?
Organic cotton! For it’s super soft feel as well for a cleaner environment.
What are the most rewarding and most challenging aspects of your job?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing customers delight in finding the unique item they’ve been looking for, and their happiness when they discover the high quality of the garment’s fabric and construction. The most challenging aspect is finding a set of buttons or thread after they’ve been ‘relocated’ by my scallywag daughter!
If one of our readers in your city (which is Sydney) for 24 hours, what one thing would you recommend they do?
A sunset drink at Opera Bar at Circular Quay. Watching the sunset turn the Sydney Opera House from white to pink, while the bridge lights up is a fun evening for the whole family. You may even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the ‘Sydney seal’ that sometimes takes up residence on the Opera House steps in the summertime.
